Our Letter to Ontario Attorney General

Ministry of the Attorney General March 20, 2007
720 Bay St, 11th Floor
Toronto ON M5G 2K1

Attention: Hon. Michael Bryant
Re: Ombudsman Report, your press release March 2, 2007

Dear Minister Bryant

We are pleased that your office has agreed with the recommendations of the Ontario Ombudsman “Adding Insult to Injury” dated February 2007 and we thank you for your immediate response.
The Canadian Crime Victim Foundation supports the recommendations submitted by the Ontario Ombudsman and further recommends a complete overhaul of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board to eliminate a systemic culture that has been allowed to flourish under its current leadership.
We also welcome the recently announced funding increase for the Compensation Board, however we respectfully caution that funding alone will not fix the problem.
Your press release of March 2, confirming the appointing the Chief Justice of Ontario, Roy McMurtry ,..” to help us overhaul the compensation system to improve victim services.”, did not mention any review of cases that that were highlighted in the Ombudsman report, nor an in-depth review of necessary corrective actions that could be undertaken.
We look forward to assisting your office and Chief Justice McMurtry in any way possible to achieve the stated objectives in Mr. Marin’s report.

Sincerely

Joe Wamback
Board Chair
