WINNIPEG — In a sickening case that has astounded even veteran police officers, three young girls and a teenage boy have been charged with savagely beating a stranger to death for no apparent reason.
The youths — a 12-year-old girl, two 14-year-old girls and a 15-year-old boy — are known in their downtown Winnipeg neighbourhood for roaming about beating up people at random.
It appears their sadistic game may have caught up to them, though, as all four have now been charged with second-degree murder for their alleged roles in the fatal beating of 34-year-old Audrey Cooper, who was found dead outside her home about 2:45 a.m. last Saturday.
“There’s no indication these youths knew her whatsoever. It seems to be a random act of violence,” said Winnipeg police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Dennison.
A young neighbour told Sun Media yesterday she witnessed a portion of the beating.
“I seen them kick her in the head and beat her with a baseball bat,” said the girl, who knows some of the suspects.
She said one accused told her they beat Cooper for so long they took a cigarette break at one point, then resumed the beating.
The girl claims it’s not the first time the group has attacked someone without reason.
“These kids like to jump people. Let’s put it that way,” she said.
All four suspects will be tried in youth court.
