SERVICES

  • in cooperation and partnership with public based services and programs
  • to educate police officers and front line staff on victims needs
  • to support the police (with victim consent) and the officer in charge with immediate crisis intervention, counselling, follow-up, assistance with criminal injuries compensation, trial assistance, minimization of re-victimization and referrals to supportive agencies

A recent study has shown that Judges are routinely waiving a federal victim surcharge they are supposed to levy against lawbreakers to help support crime victims, but the study found the fee was waived in two-thirds of 62,000 cases over five years, denying victims of crime the support, counselling and financial assistance the law requires. “SHOULD JUDGES BE COMPELLED TO LEVY THESE SURCHARGES?”
